Charles Braddon

 
Charles Braddon (1816-1887) was born in Cornwall, and qualified MRCS in 1838. He moved to Crediton and was appointed to fill the vacancy at Bow in 1840 when Mr Brutton died.

That year he wrote an article, which was published in The Lancet, describing the successful surgical treatment of a strangulated hernia. He operated on the patient (Miss Elizabeth Stuckey) in her home in Crediton. This was one of the earliest journal articles published by a west-country general practitioner, and the letter is reproduced below.

He resigned after less than a year, moving to take over a practice in Upton upon Severn, Worcestershire. He married twice and had a total of 14 children.
