Harry May

Late in 1874 Dr Harry May (1831 – 1906) replaced Dr Thurston. He had qualified in 1852 and then worked in Staffordshire, his birthplace, for the Stone Union. He had resigned as Union Medical Officer there on the grounds of ill-health. He brought his family to Bow; they too lived in Winsor House. Florence, the youngest of his ten children was born shortly after they arrived in Bow. After three years they left and moved to Ware in Hertfordshire. He gained an MD from St Andrews in 1880.

In 1876 it was reported that, in Bow, fourteen persons had been in the habit of sleeping in one room about fifteen feet square.
