Howard Lyon Smith

Dr Howard Lyon Smith (1863-1942) holds the record for the doctor with the shortest tenure in Bow. Dr Haycroft had died on 7 August 1912, H Lyon Smith was interviewed and appointed on 12 October 1912 and resigned on 23 November stating that he found the travelling distances (presumably to see patients) too great. He had already agreed to buy Fair Park from Dr Haycroft’s widow for £1000, however at the same time as he resigned Dr Arthur King applied and was appointed, and agreed to buy the house for the same price.

Just after Dr Smith was appointed, Mrs Emily Pike, a 41 year old widow of Bow, was fined five shillings for acting as a midwife without a certificate.
