Samuel Joseph Staniland

Dr Samuel Staniland replaced Dr Warren when he retired in 1869. He and his family came to Bow from Great Ouseburn in Yorkshire. They lived at Winsor House with their seven children and two more daughters were born here.

He resigned as medical officer to the Crediton Poor Law Union in March 1871, to be replaced by Dr William French Thurston who was his assistant, living with them at the time, and who was to marry Staniland’s eldest daughter Louise six years later.

When they left Bow there was an auction of their house contents. The advertisement claimed the owner was “leaving Bow for a very distant part of this country” although in 1875 his registered address with the GMC was Bristol, where he remained until his death aged 87 in 1919.
